How To Stop Yourself Burning Out As A Personal Trainer…

How To Stop Yourself Burning Out As A Personal Trainer

Being a personal trainer is an extremely demanding job! At the start of your career you have to work hard to get clients – giving out free sessions, and talking to people all day long. You work every hour god sends in order to build your business (well I did anyway!).

Then you get busy and spend all of your time working with clients, stood up on your feet, passing weights, demonstrating techniques, and giving motivational talks. Then when you’re away from clients… you’re sat at a computer writing nutritional plans, workout programmes, and replying to e-mails! It can be very consuming!

There’s no doubt about it…being a personal trainer is a fantastic job, but it can also be extremely exhausting. I for one have burned out on more than one occasion. At one point in my career I was doing 60 sessions per week, my business was booming, money was coming in thick and fast, but it was a recipe for planet burnout…and it eventually caught up with me and I was exhausted beyond belief.

In this post I thought it would be good to give you some tips to prevent exhaustion…

How To Stop Yourself Burning Out As A Personal Trainer

personal trainer business tips

#1 Take Regular Breaks

Yeah, I know…pointing out the obvious right? BUT it’s so important to take regular breaks. I recommend taking at least 4 days off every 3 months. It could be a long weekend away in the Lake District, or a break at home, where you watch Netflix all day and relax.

Or if you are like me… you can still use the time to learn i.e. by attending a weekend course, or spending a couple of days reading books to boost your education. It’s important to take breaks away from work, so that you recharge. You will come back fresh, inspired and more creative. Your health and business will thank you for it.

#2 One Day Detox

Once per week I recommend completely switching off from work. For me it’s a Sunday. I wake up on Sunday, check my e-mails and respond to anything urgent. Then I switch my phone off, close my laptop, and spend the day with my family. I don’t check social media, or e-mails, and I relax from work. It’s amazing how one day off per week can completely help you re-charge. I also like to get out for a big walk in the fresh air – living in Sheffield is amazing, because we have the Peak District (so many amazing walks!) one of the most beautiful places in the UK.

#3 Outsource

When you become very busy as a personal trainer it’s wise to hire another person to help you complete tasks. It could be another trainer to help you with the demand for clients, or it could be a PA who manages your diary, takes phone calls, and does basic admin jobs. Freeing up your time will reduce your workload and help you focus on growing your business, and also allow you to take a step back at times, knowing somebody else will do the work when you need a rest.

#4 Meditate

I’ve talked about this extensively the last few years, meditating is one of the best things you can do to relax your mind, boost creativity, and recharge your batteries both mentally and physically. The two apps I recommend are Headspace and Calm (I currently use Calm) – they are really easy to follow, somebody talks to you, all you have to do is sit back and relax.

Just 10 mins a day can make a huge difference to your health, mind, and body, and it will help your personal training business. I like to meditate in the morning, to help me clear my mind for the day and focus, I also like to meditate at night, when my mind is super active and can’t relax!
