The benefits of fitness tracking...

We all know that keeping up an exercise routine takes willpower. Just showing up at the gym every day can feel like a victory in itself – and it should. But if you’re putting in the hours, it’s important to know that you’re also making the most of them, which is where fitness tracking comes in.

Fitness tracking is about taking a hard, clinical look at how you’re progressing towards your health and fitness goals. You can do it yourself with the help of a diary, app or online fitness coach, or with the help of your personal trainer. However you choose to do it, taking the time out for fitness training comes with numerous benefits to help you to stay motivated and avoid the fitness plateau that many of us fall into from time to time.

Here are a few key pieces of information you should be tracking as part of your diet and exercise regime.

Food intake

Studies have shown that keeping a record of what you eat can double your chances of achieving and maintaining healthy weight loss. It’s not about denying yourself every little pleasure, but keeping a food diary can be an invaluable tool in ensuring you get all the right proteins, and getting a realistic view of your daily calorie intake – snacks included!

Cardio

Once you’ve established a cardio routine, it’s all too easy to get comfortable in it, which often leads to the dreaded fitness plateau. By keeping a record of your distances covered and time taken, you can keep setting fresh goals that take you further and push you harder.

Weight

Regular weigh-ins are an important way of documenting your progress and motivating yourself to hit your targets, whatever they may be. Weight isn’t the only indication of a healthy body, so try not to get too hung up on the numbers game, but keeping a realistic view on your vital statistics is always going to be a good way to stay on track.

Muscle building

Like cardio, weight training can easily become a routine that keeps you from achieving your full potential. Once you start to get comfortable, you should always be looking to up your game, particularly if you’re focusing on body building. Keeping a diary of your reps and sets can remind you to push a little harder and mix up your routine before you start losing momentum.
