Nick! You Have No Idea What It’s Like To Be Fat!
17/01/2019I remember last year having a consultation with a women who abruptly cut me off mid sentence and said…
“Nick! you wouldn’t know what it’s like to be fat! you’ve never been fat?!?”
Her comment stopped me in my tracks and got me thinking…
After a moment of hesitation I said…
“YES maybe you’re right, but I know what it’s like to feel depressed, I know what it’s like to be broke, I know what it’s like to struggle”
I said that although i’ve never been overweight I can relate to people who struggle because I’ve had my own struggles at times.
I TOTALLY GET IT…
I can relate to her thinking. I remember working with a client 5 years ago who sold his computer company for £33,000,000 (yes, that’s 33 million!). I remember thinking at the time, when I was broke… “you jammy git!” and feeling jealous at his situation because whilst I was working for £7.50 per hour, and struggling to pay my rent…. he was cruising around Sheffield in a Ferrari!
I thought he was very lucky…and that he had no idea what it was like to be in my position (broke!).
As I continued working with him I learned a great deal. He was no different to me in many ways, he still had problems and had good and bad days – we all do!
Alongside me coaching him, he also took me under his wing and I learned some of my most valuable lessons to date…
I realised that he wasn’t anything special (nobody is!)…
BUT what he did have was a bunch of ‘productive daily habits’ that he reenforced over the years that had made him super successful over time.
I started to ask him question about business, and how he got to where he was. I discovered some of his success habits…
For example…
He read everyday (and had done for the last 30 years!). His morning routine Monday-Sunday consisted of waking up at 6am, reading for 1 hour (a combination of business/financial magazines, combined with a self development book).
He told me to save 10-20% per month to invest either back into my business, or into something else that would increase in value – like property or a pension.
He told me was to invest 10% of my yearly income into hiring coaches and mentors to help me improve my skill(s) as a coach and take my business to the next level.
He taught me to constantly reflect, to look at what’s working and ditch what isn’t. He advised me to take time out regularly, at least once per month to assess my life – I have to ask myself two questions…
#1 Am I happy?
#2 Am I building the life that I want?
If the answer is YES then continue, if it’s NO then look for whats was missing and take immediate action to change my direction.
I took everything he said on board, and stopped moaning about my current situation…
I started to set in place my own morning routine, for example meditating, reading, saying positive affirmations, etc. I started to think about each day, and aimed for consistent, small improvements that would add up over the years.
Over the past 5 years thanks to his guidance some epic things have happened, and it’s all to do with putting in place the small, daily routine and having a structure in place that leads to results.
Take Ownership…
It’s easy to put your feet up, blame the world… “i’m just naturally fat!” or “I have poor genetics” but the truth is we all have 24hrs in a day, and what separates us as individuals isn’t really that much…
Really it’s what we do with our time that makes the difference.
What if I told you that you weren’t actually that different to the guy you look at on Mens Health magazine. The only difference is that he goes to the gym 5x per week for an hr and you go to the pub 5x per week for an hour! lol!
If you ditched the pub and started working out instead, in a years time you’d look totally different.
There’s no such thing as an overnight success story.
Look at the people you aspire to be like and dissect what they do on a day to day basis. It’s not often fancy. They focus on a few things each day, and do that for years and years. They have a vision, they make a plan, and they take CONSISTENT ACTION.
Know matter who you are, how good your life is, or how bad your life is…
YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE.
YOU HAVE THE POWER TO TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE.
Who you are now does not have to be who you are in 10 years from now. If you commit to CANI (Constant And Never-ending Improvement) your life will transform…
